On July 13th Cedarstone Advisors will hold its 5th Annual Give Back Day at Children’s Hunger Fund in Sylmar. This is one of my favorite events of the year as we work side by side with our clients to help the most vulnerable among us, children in need. Children’s Hunger Fund is a Christian non-profit organization whose mission is to alleviate hunger and spread the good news of Christianity to the suffering world.
We choose to partner with Children’s Hunger Fund for several reasons. First, Children’s Hunger Fund has a very simple and clear vision. Secondly, Children’s Hunger Fund is an extremely well-run organization, and is consistently ranked as one of the top charities in the country for efficiency and transparency. According to Charity Navigator more than 95% of their spending goes directly to those in need, with less than 5% going to administrative expenses or overhead.
Frequently, the food comes from corporate donations, which are received in bulk, sorted into food packs for delivery, and then shipped to churches who deliver the food, often by hand, to individual families. By partnering with corporations for food donations, volunteer labor for sorting and packing, and local churches for final delivery, the organization operates incredibly efficiently.
When we volunteer together, our job is typically to sort and pack food for delivery. I appreciate that Children’s Hunger Fund takes our time seriously, making the day well organized and worthwhile. Whether it is weighing and bagging macaroni, sorting cans, or sifting through Costco donations, we always work hard and make a difference.
I have also had the privilege to hand delivery some of the Children’s Hunger Fund food packs in Africa. Frequently, while we package food here at home, I think about the families that will ultimately receive these packages, and know that each box will bring welcome relief, making the difference between malnourishment and health. I also have seen the value of partnering with local churches, who deliver each box with care, bringing hope and love along with the gift of food.
